DIY Rockcrawler PS Conversion Kit
Part Number: 20739
Price: $119.95
Looking to do a rock-solid power steering upgrade on a budget? You can assemble your own Rockcrawler power steering gearbox using parts from the junkyard or donor vehicles. Also known as the "4X4X2" steering box, this conversion basically consists of using a 78/79 Bronco or F150 4X4 steering gear, and reversing its rotation by swapping in the worm gear and valve housing from an '80s Ford pickup, Bronco or Ranger. See our in-depth DIY Rockcrawler Steering Tech Article [click here] for more information and complete procedures. This kit makes the conversion easier by providing several key components:- The Rockcrawler PS Box Adapter Plate Kit allows you to bolt the converted box directly to your Bronco's frame wouthout cutting or drilling new holes.
- The Rockcrawler Steering Box Seal Kit provides everything you need to seal up your converted box against leaks (use just the seals for the valve housing to do a simple conversion, or the entire kit if you have the ability to do a complete rebuild while you're at it!).
- The correct High Pressure Hose to connect your power steering pump to the Rockcrawler Box (Saginaw pump only--hoses for the stock EB pump and late model plastic pump will be available soon).
Several options are also available: - Power Steering Fluid Low Pressure Return Hose. If you're converting from a stock power steering box you can re-use your existing hose.
- Non-Indexed Drop Pitman Arm is useful to re-center your steering, as the thickness of the adapter plate positions the steering box 3/4" further outboard from the frame (the absence of indexing keys on the pitman arm allows you to move it one spline in the direction needed). Otherwise, this issue can be solved by using an adjustable drag link.
- Steering U-Joint of your choice. If you're converting from a manual steering system, use the 2/4"-26 X 3/4" Round joint and weld the 3/4" Round side to the shortened shaft. If you're using a different steering shaft setup, choose the correct u-joint or leave it as "No".
NOTE: Do NOT attempt this conversion unless you're a competent mechanic, have the correct tools and are familiar with the procedure. WCB does not provide technical assistance for this modification, as you will be using mostly used parts.
