Moss Brothers RacingWe at West Coast Broncos are extremely proud of our association with Don and Ken Moss and their championship team. To the best of our knowledge, no other vehicle in the history of SCORE has won more races and class championships than the Big Black Bronco of Moss Brothers Racing. Our relationship with Moss Brothers spans several years, with West Coast Broncos providing such items as replacment body panels and our famous Long Travel Tubular Radius Arms to help get the Bronco to the checkered flag.
The Moss Brothers Racing StoryThough the name is not terribly original, it does reflect a fundamental team value—family and friends. The team is simply named after the two drivers, Don and Ken Moss. The team name was formerly Cinnamon Ranch Racing, a tribute to the family's ranch in Bishop, California, where the boys grew up working on and modifying farm equipment. This is also where they learned to keep equipment running.
When the brothers decided to go racing in 2000, they chose the longest and most grueling race in the North American history to start with, the SCORE BAJA 2000. This was a once in a lifetime 2000 mile race commemorating the year 2000, and covered the brutal desert running the length of the Baja peninsula, from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas. As a race vehicle, they chose a Ford Bronco. This was at least partially due to the fact that Tom Baker, Don's father-in-law had raced an early Bronco in the 1970's. The Moss brothers focused on the 1978-79 vintage due to the longer wheelbase and the selection of drivetrain components that came in those years. The Moss Brother's Bronco has been recognized as the most successful Bronco in racing history, with over 26 wins as of 2008.
Don Moss was drawn to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo when he heard about the SAE club's involvement with a Toyota off road race truck that was raced all over Baja, Nevada and California. It was even piloted at one time by Roger Mears. Don recalls back then that he knew that it would only be a matter of time before he would put something together of his own. Both drivers and the majority of the support crew are all engineering graduates of Cal Poly in the late 80's or early 90's, where many were also members of the Poly Goats 4 Wheel Drive club or the Poly Penguins Motorcycle club. This band of friends remains dedicated to their common passion for the racing, despite now being spread all across California.
All of their forays into off road racing have been with teams boasting a nearly 100% finishing rate. In the early days, Ken was the rider on a quad or motorcycle, while Don provided chase and crew support. In 2004, the Moss Brother's Racing team was one of only 2 teams who were undefeated for the year, while also earning the class championship. In addition to this record, they also collected one of the Toyota Milestone awards, which is presented to the team that finishes every mile of every race during that season, an award that Don is very proud of.
For a variety of reasons, the team seldom has the luxury of pre-running any of the Mexican races. They rely on extensive notes taken during each event and on their own knowledge and instinct. The Moss Brother's are cautious but aggressive racers, always concentrating on the finish. "To finish first, first you have to finish"
